El Fasher, September 20 (Darfur24)
At least 50 people were killed and dozens more wounded early Friday when a mosque sheltering displaced families was hit during dawn prayers in El Fasher, North Darfur, amid ongoing clashes between the army, joint forces, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Eyewitnesses and medical sources told Darfur24 that a drone believed to have been launched from RSF-controlled areas fired two missiles at the mosque in El Fasher’s first-class neighborhood, north of the city. The strike targeted people who had fled Abu Shouk camp following intensified fighting.
Musab Ibrahim, a witness, said rescue teams and volunteers were still retrieving bodies from the rubble under difficult security and humanitarian conditions. He reported the deaths of several prominent figures, including Adam Wad Al-Sheikh, head of the civil administration at Abu Shouk camp; King Sharif Adam Tahir Shamin, King of Dar Sweini; and Dr. Omar Ishaq Silk, along with other community leaders.
A medical source at the North Darfur Ministry of Health confirmed an initial toll of 48 dead and 25 injured, noting that some of the wounded required urgent surgery. The Saudi Hospital is the only facility still treating casualties after other hospitals were forced out of service. Health workers warned of shortages in staff and supplies as the toll continues to rise.
The RSF has maintained a siege on El Fasher since April last year, seeking to capture the city—the last major army stronghold in Darfur—after taking control of Nyala, Zalingei, El Geneina, and El Daein in 2023.
Darfur24 could not independently verify the final casualty figures at the time of publication.
