The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, welcomed the efforts of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States to secure a three-month humanitarian truce in Sudan.
In a post on X, Fletcher said the UN is ready to act, stressing the need for safe and unhindered access to deliver life-saving aid.
The Quartet’s joint statement underscored that Sudan’s sovereignty and unity are vital for stability, and that the conflict has no military solution. It urged all parties to facilitate humanitarian access, protect civilians under international law, and avoid attacks on civilian infrastructure.
The statement also called for an inclusive transition process, led by Sudanese citizens, to establish a democratic civilian government within nine months.
Meanwhile, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric announced that the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Ramtane Lamamra, concluded a visit to Port Sudan after consultations in Nairobi.
In Port Sudan, Lamamra met Prime Minister Kamil Idris, cabinet members, civil society actors, women’s groups, and diplomats. Dujarric said the envoy strongly encouraged all parties to engage in an inclusive dialogue as part of wider efforts to lay the foundation for a sustainable peace process that safeguards Sudan’s sovereignty and unity.
