Port Sudan, September 2(Darfur24)
The Acting UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Luca Renda, expressed deep regret over reports of a deadly landslide in the village of Tarsin, in Jebel Marra, Darfur, which killed a large number of people, possibly between 300 and 1,000, according to local sources.
The landslide occurred on August 31 following heavy rains. UN official Luca Renda offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Sudan “at this tragic time.”
He said that the United Nations and its humanitarian partners are mobilizing to provide support to the affected population.
He emphasized that the humanitarian community stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and will spare no effort to ensure that aid reaches those in need without delay.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed its sadness over the catastrophic landslide in the village of Tarsin, Central Darfur. It said this tragedy—one of the largest disasters in Sudan’s modern history—occurs amid a brutal war that has already displaced millions of people and left communities on the brink of famine.
The organization stated in a press release that Jebel Marra, where the landslide occurred, has become a refuge for families fleeing violence in El Fasher and neighboring areas. It added that humanitarian organizations are unable to access the area due to ongoing conflict and restrictions, exacerbating the hardships faced by those affected.
This tragedy, the IOM said, underscores the urgent need for safe humanitarian access and expanded support. It added, “The people of Sudan cannot endure this endless conflict alone.”
The organization joined the humanitarian community in calling for immediate and unhindered access to the affected areas. It urged all parties to the conflict to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure the safety of civilians and humanitarian workers.
