Nyala, August 24(Darfur 24)
Medical sources in Nyala, South Darfur, revealed on Sunday an increase in hepatitis cases among the city’s residents.
A source from Nyala Teaching Hospital told Darfur 24 that more than 30 cases were recorded between June and August.
He indicated that the actual number of cases is much higher than reported, as some cases do not reach health facilities.
A source from a private clinic in Nyala told Darfur 24 that his clinic received seven cases during the past week, out of a total of 15 cases during the current month of August.
He stated that the majority of hepatitis b cases are young men and women, some of whom have come from Khartoum State. He noted that some cases have been transferred to El Daein in East Darfur and Ad Dabba in Northern State due to the availability of treatment there.
He stated that the shortage of some hepatitis C medications and the high prices of others, which reached 45,000 Sudanese pounds per dose, compared to 10,000 to 12,000 Sudanese pounds before the war, led to the deaths of a number of patients.
A source in the state Ministry of Health previously told Darfur 24 that the loss and destruction of files and records of patients with chronic and epidemic diseases at the ministry occurred after the fall of the army headquarters in Nyala to the Rapid Support Forces in October 2023.
