Kufra , July 7(Darfur 24)
Libya’s Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency announced yesterday, Sunday, the deportation of 172 Sudanese refugees from the city of Kufra to the Sudanese border.
The agency stated, in a statement obtained by Darfur 24, that the deportation included Sudanese , some of whom had security restrictions imposed on them, and others who had been diagnosed with serious and contagious diseases.
The agency did not provide further details about the operation or the identities of the deportees.
A number of Sudanese residents in Libya told Darfur 24 that among those deported were refugees registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), indicating that they had been detained for periods exceeding six months in several Libyan detention centers.
Sulaiman Abdullah, a member of the Sudanese community in Libya, said that the majority of those deported were transferred from the Qanfouda detention center in Benghazi and from Kufra, following a widespread campaign of arrests targeting foreigners during the last Eid al-Adha holiday.
For his part, Khaled A., a member of the Sudanese community in Libya, expressed concern about the timing of the deportation, warning that returning them to Sudan, in light of the recent military escalation in the border triangle between Libya, Sudan, and Egypt, could pose a risk. directly impacting their lives.
Eyewitnesses confirmed the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Triangle region with the continuation of military operations, which increases the suffering of the deportees and exposes them to further dangers.
Libya hosts thousands of Sudanese refugees, particularly in the cities of Kufra, Benghazi, and Ajdabiya in the east of the country, in addition to Misrata and Tripoli in the west.
The number of Sudanese refugees registered in Libya as of June is estimated at approximately 313,000, according to the latest data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
