El Fasher, July 7(Darfur 24)
On Monday, the joint forces of armed movements allied with the Sudanese army arrested two journalists in the Abu Shouk camp market, north of El Fasher, North Darfur.
The arrests come days after a member of the Sudan Liberation Movement – Transitional Council, led by Salah Rasas, shot journalist Nasr Yaqoub in the Abu Shouk camp market.
Local sources and eyewitnesses told Darfur 24 that members of the Sudan Liberation Movement – Transitional Council (SLM-TC) “arrested journalists Nasr Yaqoub and Mohamed Ahmed Nizar from the former’s shop in the Abu Shouk camp market.”
The sources indicated that the two journalists were taken to the movement’s headquarters in El Fasher.
The reasons for their apprehension were attributed to Nasr Yaqoub’s statement about being shot by the joint forces affiliate while Mohamed Ahmed Nizar posted on social media referring to the shooting of his colleague Nasr Yaqoub.
Journalist Nasr Yaqoub told Darfur 24 on Saturday that he was shot by a member of the SLM-TC after he refused to hand over his Starlink device.
He explained that the member shot him immediately after he refused to hand over Starlink device.
Most areas of Darfur rely on Starlink devices for internet service, which are operated by individuals through local shops, after the conflict destroyed the region’s communications infrastructure.
Residents of El Fasher and Abu Shouk camp complain of abuses committed by members of the joint force affiliated with armed movements, including looting of property under the pretext of communicating with the Rapid Support Forces.
