Port Sudan, February 17(Darfur 24)

The Sudanese government decided to continue opening the Adre crossing linking West Darfur State and Chad for three months starting from February 16.

The Sudanese authorities allowed the Adre crossing to be opened for the entry of humanitarian aid for a period of three months starting from August 15, before extending it for a similar period starting from November 15, 2023.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered, in a statement obtained by Darfur 24, that “the continued opening of the Adre crossing for three months is a commitment by the government to facilitate the access of humanitarian aid to areas affected by the war, especially Darfur states, and to use all available border crossings for this purpose.”

It indicated that this step will lead to alleviating the suffering of Darfur citizens.

It called on the international community to take action against the Rapid Support Forces, by not exploiting the crossing to bring in weapons and supplies to be used in killing unarmed civilians, and to ensure that the passage of humanitarian aid is not obstructed or controlled.

The United Nations says Darfur is facing a dire humanitarian crisis, with 79% of its population in need of humanitarian aid and protection.
