January 15, 2025 Port Sudan: Darfur24 The Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, issued a decree on Wednesday to form a committee to investigate the violations that occurred in “Kambo Taiba” in Al-Jazeera State.

Video clips monitored and documented by human rights groups showed human rights violations by the Sudanese army forces and their allies, including killing in shocking ways, against citizens in the city of Wad Madani and a number of Al-Kanabi.

The Al-Kanabi Conference Central Committee said in a statement that “the serious violations and criminal practices that the residents of Al-Kanabi areas in Al-Jazeera were subjected to amount to genocide, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing, and threaten the security and safety of Sudanese society.”

The investigation committee formed by Al-Burhan is headed by Yasser Bashir Al-Bukhari, First Assistant to the Attorney General, and includes others, according to Sudanese News Agency SUNA.

The decree stipulated that the committee’s tasks would be to collect evidence and investigate the incidents that took place in Al-Kambo, Al-Jazeera State, from the site of their occurrence, obtain testimonies and statements, and summon persons concerned with the events and witnesses.

It pointed out that the committee’s tasks are to document all steps and procedures taken during the investigation process, in addition to preparing a detailed report on the facts and results reached, and coordinating with governmental, legal and security agencies in the state, in addition to ensuring transparency in all stages of the investigation and providing correct information to public opinion.

The decree granted the committee the right to seek assistance from whomever it deems appropriate, provided that it submits its final report within a period not exceeding one week.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta Salami, said in a statement that “reports of revenge attacks against civilians in Al-Jazeera State based on alleged affiliation or ethnicity raise serious concerns about flagrant violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law.”

She added, “I strongly condemn any form of violence against civilians. Civilians must be protected in armed conflicts.”
