Nyala, October 28 (Darfur24)
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, said Nyala Teaching Hospital received the bodies of 36 people and more than 150 injured following a Sudanese army drone strike on a market west of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, on Monday evening.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the medical organization said 21 of the dead were wearing civilian clothes. It also reported a second strike targeting a residential neighborhood in the city.
Dale Coninckx, MSF’s project coordinator in Nyala, said medical teams treated patients suffering from shrapnel wounds and severe burns. Some victims were transported from the attack site to the hospital in tuk-tuks and donkey-drawn carts, he added.
Medical teams worked around the clock to treat the wounded, including women and children, Coninckx said, describing the shock among hospital staff.
MSF condemned attacks on markets, homes and civilian infrastructure, stressing that such locations should not be targeted. The organization called on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians.
The strike followed a similar incident on October 16, when a drone attack hit a livestock market in Nyala, killing at least four people and injuring others, according to MSF.
The organization warned that attacks on civilian areas threaten residents’ safety and their access to food and essential supplies, as concerns about malnutrition continue to grow.
The statement also referred to reports of drone attacks attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that targeted electricity facilities in Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, Al-Qadarif, Sennar and White Nile states in recent days.
