Kalma, October 21 (Darfur24)
The Sudanese Founding Alliance (TASIS), which is Sudan’s parallel government, has pledged to deploy its available health resources to support displaced people in Kalma camp in South Darfur and monitor the performance of humanitarian organizations operating there.
The pledge was announced during a visit by a delegation led by Ezz El-Din Al-Safi, TASIS chairman of the National Authority for Humanitarian Access, accompanied by Al-Amin Othman Falati, undersecretary of the Ministry of Health.
According to a statement from TASIS media office, the delegation met camp leaders and representatives of its eight centers, who outlined urgent needs for food, medicine, drinking water and healthcare.
Furthermore, the statement estimates the camp’s population at more than 600,000 people, with each center hosting over 80,000 displaced people.
Al-Safi announced plans to launch an early recovery initiative in Kalma to reduce reliance on humanitarian assistance and promote self-sufficiency. He also said a humanitarian conference involving representatives of displaced people from various camps would be held in November to discuss their demands and challenges.
He added that the National Authority for Humanitarian Access would monitor aid organizations’ performance and their fulfilment of responsibilities towards displaced people, warning that action would be taken against organizations found to be negligent.
During the meeting, displaced people’s representatives called for improved access to basic services and accountability for those responsible for violations they said had forced them to flee their homes. They stressed that justice remained essential even if the war ended.
Participants also recalled the killing of 20 people at Kalma camp in 2017 during protests against a visit by former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.
Falati said the Ministry of Health would use its available resources to address the camp’s medical needs, citing its large population and the demand for treatment, medicines, and basic healthcare services.
