Two women and their newborn babies died after giving birth in Atash displacement camp in Nyala, South Darfur State, according to a camp official who spoke to Darfur24.
The official said the women and their babies died shortly after delivery late Thursday and Friday. The deaths followed seven miscarriages among women in the camp, although the causes were not immediately known.
A medical source attributed the deaths to limited maternal healthcare in the camp, saying health centers lack adequate funding and support to provide services to pregnant women.
A South Darfur Ministry of Health report recorded 47 maternal deaths during the first half of this year. Postpartum hemorrhage was the leading cause, while the report also cited high rates of home births and limited access to health facilities for antenatal and delivery care.
Earlier, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Netherlands said maternal deaths at two hospitals it supports in South Darfur accounted for more than 7% of all maternal deaths recorded across its facilities worldwide.
Healthcare services in South Darfur have deteriorated amid the ongoing war, with funding shortages and difficulties accessing humanitarian assistance further limiting care for displaced communities.
