The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have arrested the head of the civil administration in East Darfur State, Mohamed Idris Khater, over alleged administrative and financial violations committed during his tenure, according to local sources.
The RSF appointed Khater to head the East Darfur civil administration in September 2024.
Sources told Darfur24 that investigations had implicated Khater in alleged financial corruption, the disposal of public squares and cemeteries without legal authorization, and the controversial allocation of the Al-Zariba parking area in Al-Daein market for conversion into commercial units.
Other sources said the RSF had summoned Khater to Nyala, the main centre of the “Founding” coalition’s administration, over corruption allegations that had triggered public anger in Al-Daein.
The sources said the move was part of efforts to “correct the course” and address administrative shortcomings in the management of state services.
Khater’s arrest comes about a week after protests and public criticism erupted in East Darfur over the decision to allocate the Al-Zariba parking area for commercial development.
Several activists were arrested in recent days after opposing the decision and accusing influential figures of attempting to seize the public facility.
Last July, the RSF also arrested the head of the civil administration in South Darfur State, Youssef Idris, amid political differences with influential figures within the Founding coalition.
