Unidentified gunmen abducted eight herders, including five children and three girls, after raiding a pastoral area east of Dilling in South Kordofan State on Thursday, according to residents.
A resident told Darfur24 that the attackers intercepted the herders near the Janain Markazo area, seized about 50 head of cattle, and forced the victims toward Khamis village, east of Dilling.
Local sources said residents, supported by members of the armed forces, pursued the attackers and reached the Hajar Arka area but were unable to catch up with them. The fate of the abducted herders remained unknown at the time of publication.
South Kordofan has witnessed a rise in armed robberies and attacks targeting herders and travellers amid worsening insecurity linked to the ongoing conflict and the proliferation of armed groups.
Such incidents have become increasingly common in rural areas around Dilling, Kadugli, and Abu Jubeiha, where many communities depend on livestock and farming for their livelihoods. Residents say the deteriorating security situation has led to repeated losses of lives and property while increasing the risks faced by civilians.
