About 6,650 people have been displaced from 11 villages in Serba locality, West Darfur State, following escalating clashes and insecurity in the Bir Saliba area, according to the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM).
Last week, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced that they had captured Bir Saliba after clashes with the Joint Force allied with the Sudanese army. Field sources reported casualties on both sides, including the death of RSF commander Mahdi Jabal Moon, a senior commander in northwest Darfur.
In an update, the DTM stated that most of the displaced families had sought refuge within the Serba locality, while others had crossed into neighbouring Chad.
The agency said the security situation remains volatile and continues to monitor population movements, adding that further updates will be issued as more information becomes available.
Serba locality, which lies along the Sudan-Chad border, has experienced repeated waves of displacement since the outbreak of war in April 2023 due to recurring clashes between the RSF and the Joint Force. The violence has forced thousands of civilians to flee to safer areas within West Darfur or across the border into eastern Chad.
