The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that escalating conflict and intercommunal violence in Darfur have recently displaced more than 20,000 people, as humanitarian needs continue to grow amid the spread of cholera across Sudan.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said humanitarian partners had reported that the newly displaced people are in urgent need of assistance. He reiterated the UN’s call on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need quickly, safely, and without obstruction.
Haq said Sudan continues to battle a cholera outbreak, with more than 2,000 suspected cases and 170 deaths reported since May, most of them in the Kordofan region.
He added that the UN and its humanitarian partners are expanding the response by supporting around 80 disease surveillance sites, 16 cholera treatment centres and eight oral rehydration points, while carrying out preventive activities benefiting more than 270,000 people in affected areas.
OCHA warned that funding shortfalls are limiting the ability of humanitarian agencies to respond to growing needs and appealed to donors to provide additional financial support.
According to the UN, the 2026 Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan is only about 40% funded, having received US$1.1 billion of the US$2.9 billion required to meet humanitarian needs this year.
