Chadian authorities closed the Adré border crossing with Sudan’s West Darfur State on Tuesday after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) detained two Chadian nationals during a security operation in the border town of Adékonk, according to sources who spoke to Darfur24.
The sources said the operation formed part of what the RSF described as a campaign to combat “negative phenomena” and tighten security along the border, including stricter inspections at entry and exit points.
According to the sources, the two Chadian citizens were arrested after RSF personnel allegedly found photographs of the group’s military positions on their mobile phones.
The sources added that several Chadian nationals gathered near the Adré crossing and blocked commercial truck traffic to demand the detainees’ release, prompting Chadian authorities to shut the border crossing.
Neither the Chadian authorities nor the RSF had publicly commented on the incident or indicated how long the crossing would remain closed at the time of publication.
The Adré crossing is a vital humanitarian corridor linking Chad with West Darfur and is regarded by the United Nations as the most direct and effective route for delivering food, medicines, and other life-saving assistance to millions of people in Darfur and Kordofan.
The crossing has been opened and closed several times since the outbreak of the war in Sudan in April 2023. According to the United Nations, hundreds of humanitarian aid trucks have crossed through Adré, delivering assistance to more than 1.3 million people.
