Kaka, June 02 (Darfur24)
Chadian authorities have arrested seven community leaders from the Kaka camp for Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad as part of an investigation into the killing of a Chadian national, while deploying additional security around the camp to prevent tensions between refugees and nearby communities.
Local sources told Darfur24 that the investigation began after children discovered the victim’s body buried near the camp two days after the killing. The discovery prompted security authorities to launch an investigation to establish the circumstances of the crime and identify those responsible.
According to the sources, the seven detainees are sheikhs and members of the camp’s security committees responsible for residential blocks near the crime scene. Authorities are investigating whether they had prior knowledge of the incident or failed to report it.
The arrests have raised concerns among refugees about a repeat of events at the Meji refugee camp in 2024, when refugees reportedly came under pressure to pay $1,500 in compensation to the family of a victim as part of resolving a separate murder case, according to sources inside Kaka camp.
Authorities have since reinforced security around the camp, saying the deployment is intended to preserve order and prevent clashes between local communities and refugees while the investigation continues. No charges have been announced against the detained camp leaders, and authorities have not identified any suspects directly linked to the killing.
