Al-Nuhud, May 25 (Darfur24)

Health authorities in West Kordofan state are struggling to contain a worsening cholera outbreak in the Foga area after the number of deaths rose to 26 amid mounting infections and acute shortages of medical supplies and intravenous fluids.

A health official in the state told Darfur24 that the outbreak has so far recorded 301 cases since the epidemic began, including 29 new cases reported on Sunday alone.

The source said the number of cholera-related deaths reached 26 after another patient died on Sunday, warning that available medical supplies are insufficient to cope with the worsening situation.

According to the official, 45 patients are currently receiving treatment at the Foga health center, including seven being treated outside the facility because of overcrowding and limited capacity.

The source added that medical assistance remains inadequate to contain the outbreak and confirmed that intravenous fluids are no longer available in commercial pharmacies in the area.

On May 21, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that an outbreak of watery diarrhea linked to cholera in Al-Nuhud locality had caused around 100 suspected infections and dozens of deaths within a week.

OCHA said the World Health Organization and its partners had delivered emergency medical supplies to support response efforts in the locality.

The UN agency also warned that humanitarian organizations are struggling to contain multiple disease outbreaks across Sudan amid insecurity and restricted humanitarian access.
