Tawila, May 18 (Darfur24)
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Sunday the launch of a cholera vaccination campaign in North and South Darfur states, targeting more than 252,000 people among the most vulnerable groups.
Concerns are growing over the potential spread of cholera in Darfur as the rainy season approaches and access to clean water and sanitation services remains limited.
In a statement posted on the “X” platform, the organization said the campaign is being conducted in Tawila locality in North Darfur and Kass locality in South Darfur.
The WHO warned that the combination of seasonal rains, mass displacement, and poor access to water and sanitation services creates a high risk of cholera outbreaks in the region.
Since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023, the country’s health sector has suffered widespread collapse, with many hospitals and water facilities forced out of service. The deterioration has contributed to outbreaks of several diseases, including cholera, dengue fever, and malaria.
Humanitarian organizations also continue to face major challenges in delivering aid and health services across large parts of Darfur due to ongoing insecurity and fighting.
