Jebel Marra, May 15 (Darfur24)
Civilian authorities affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) issued an urgent appeal on Thursday following a reported rise in monkeypox cases in the Jebel Marra region of Darfur, warning of growing risks to civilians, particularly children.
In a statement published on its official page, the civil administration in Dera district said new infections continue to be recorded across the region, adding that current health interventions remain insufficient to contain the outbreak.
The authorities have called on humanitarian, regional, and international organizations to urgently support the health sector by launching large-scale vaccination campaigns and supplying the necessary medicines and medical treatment to curb the spread of the disease.
The statement warned that the outbreak could worsen further “before it is too late” if urgent assistance is not delivered.
The warning comes amid deteriorating humanitarian and health conditions across large parts of Darfur due to the ongoing conflict, weakened medical services, and shortages of essential health supplies.
The Sudan Liberation Movement controls extensive areas in Jebel Marra, in addition to Tawila and other territories in North, Central, and South Darfur states.
