Al-Daein, February 06 (Darfur24)

A large fire swept through the vital “Naam” market on the border between West Kordofan and South Sudan, causing extensive material damage to shops and commercial property, traders said.

Musa Mohammed, a merchant in the market, told Darfur24 that the blaze began from an unknown source in the fuel section before spreading rapidly to nearby shops and trading agencies. He said the full scale of the losses is still being assessed.

Mohammed added that the market has experienced repeated fires under unclear circumstances. Because the area falls outside the formal administration of either country, he said it receives little official attention, and no investigation committees have been formed to determine the causes of the recurring incidents.

The Naam market is located in the area known as Line 10, which marks the boundary between South Sudan and West Kordofan. Its importance has grown since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, becoming a key humanitarian corridor and supply hub for Sudan’s western states after trade routes with the central and northern regions were disrupted.
