Nairobi, January 30 (Darfur24)

The Libyan Relief and Humanitarian Aid Authority has distributed relief assistance to Sudanese refugees in the city of Misrata, with support from the World Food Programme (WFP), starting last Wednesday and continuing for four days.

Several refugees told Darfur24 that the assistance targeted more than 1,143 families. Each family received 20 kilograms of flour, 8 kilograms of chickpeas, 10 kilograms of rice, 6 kilograms of beans, 4 kilograms of yellow lentils, 5 liters of cooking oil, eight packs of tomato paste, and nutritional supplements for children.

Several Sudanese refugees in Misrata expressed their satisfaction with the resumption of aid distribution for the second consecutive month, following a suspension that lasted more than six months.

According to a statement published on the Authority’s Facebook page and reviewed by Darfur24, relief operations carried out in January also covered several other Libyan cities. The distributions benefited 398 families in Ajdabiya, 128 families in Derna, 1,200 beneficiaries in Tripoli, 18 families in Badr and Tiji, and 500 families in the southern region.

The Authority said the distributions are part of ongoing humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable Sudanese refugee families amid the difficult living conditions they face in Libya.

According to the latest UNHCR statistics issued in September, Libya hosts approximately 357,000 Sudanese refugees, including about 193,000 in the border municipality of Al-Kufra, 80,000 in the capital Tripoli, and 10,000 in Benghazi.

Misrata hosts more than 7,248 Sudanese refugees, while Zawiya hosts 6,190 and Jafara 20,443. In eastern Libya, Derna hosts 5,642 refugees, Tobruk 5,768, and the Green Mountain area hosts 3,822.
