Golo, January 25(Darfur24)
Health sources in the Golo area of Jebel Marra, Central Darfur State, reported on Sunday more than 300 new cases of measles, including some deaths.
The increase in cases coincides with the conclusion of a measles and rubella vaccination campaign recently launched by UNICEF in various parts of the Darfur region.
A health source told Darfur24 that the emergence of new measles cases in the Golo district in recent days has sparked widespread concern among residents.
The source indicated that more than 300 cases have been recorded in the village of Buri and the surrounding villages including six deaths, according to the initial assessment by the field team of the Golo district emergency response unit.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) had warned late December of a measles outbreak in the Darfur region of western Sudan, after more than 1,300 cases had been recorded in September, amid the absence of urgent and effective vaccination campaigns.
