The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced that the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will hold meetings in Geneva as part of the UN’s efforts to end the two-year-long conflict in Sudan.
In an interview with Al Arabiya and Al Hadath from UN headquarters in Riyadh, Guterres said the organization is “talking to all Sudanese parties” and described the upcoming talks as an important step toward restoring peace.
Guterres accused the RSF of committing “atrocities” in Sudan and called for accountability for those responsible for attacks on UN missions in El Fasher. He stressed that the suffering of the Sudanese people is “unprecedented” and demands urgent action.
The Secretary-General noted that the UN had received assurances to facilitate humanitarian access to affected areas, particularly El Fasher, which faces complex humanitarian conditions following the RSF’s takeover.
Guterres also commented on regional developments, calling the situation in Yemen’s Hadramawt a “dangerous escalation” and condemning the Houthi detention of UN staff as “unacceptable.” He expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s cooperation in peace diplomacy efforts.
