Port Sudan, November 30 (Darfur24)

The Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Sudanese Army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Saturday with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki at the Eastern Palace in Port Sudan.

According to a statement from the Sovereignty Council shared with Darfur24, the discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and activating cooperation across various sectors, including security, economy, and trade.

The statement said the two leaders reviewed the latest developments in Sudan amid the ongoing conflict and exchanged views on regional issues of mutual concern. They also discussed ways to contribute to stability and peace in the wider region.

Both sides affirmed their commitment to elevating bilateral relations to “advanced levels” and expanding them toward a broader strategic partnership. They also expressed readiness to coordinate efforts to achieve regional stability and development, according to the statement.

Eritrea, a key neighbor with long historical ties to Sudan, has experienced fluctuating relations with Khartoum over the years. However, cooperation between the two countries has notably increased since the outbreak of war in Sudan in 2023.
