Nyala, October 28 (Darfur24)

Medical sources reported on Monday that several pregnant women and children have died from complications related to malnutrition in Kalma camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs), east of Nyala in South Darfur State.

A local medical source told Darfur24 that deaths among pregnant women were recorded between August and October, adding that malnutrition has become widespread among children aged under five during the same period. However, he did not disclose the exact numbers.

According to the source, more than 900 children suffering from acute malnutrition are currently receiving therapeutic food at health centers inside the camp, supported by humanitarian organizations.

Hanan Hassan, the Women’s Secretary at Kalma camp, told Darfur24 that the deteriorating health conditions among mothers and children are a direct result of worsening living conditions and the suspension of humanitarian aid.

She explained that most displaced women rely on daily labor outside the camp to support their families, but they are unable to work during pregnancy, which further weakens their health and nutrition.

Kalma camp, one of the largest displacement camps in Darfur, hosts more than 300,000 people. The number has sharply increased since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, deepening the already dire humanitarian crisis.
