Nyala, October 3 (Darfur24)

Nine people were killed and 18 others injured in armed clashes between two groups of the Habaniya tribe in Buram, South Darfur, last Saturday. The violence erupted over a romantic dispute and escalated after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intervened.

Local sources told Darfur24 that the incident began in Buram market when an argument broke out between two groups of young men from the same tribe over a young woman. Tensions flared when RSF personnel operating under the “Negative Phenomena” campaign intervened and confiscated a machine gun from one of the men.

A community leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said armed youth from the aggrieved group mobilized and attacked the RSF unit inside the market. Intense clashes ensued, killing nine people—including civilians and a local leader—and injuring 18 others. The wounded were transferred to Buram Rural Hospital and medical facilities in Nyala.

RSF forces later intervened to separate the groups and withdrew the “Negative Phenomena” unit to Nyala. The situation in Buram remained tense but calm on Sunday amid fears of renewed violence.

An eyewitness told Darfur24 that the incident occurred on market day, which contributed to the high number of civilian casualties. At least three civilians were among the dead, while several of the injured remain in critical condition.

Buram has been under RSF control since the Sudanese army withdrew in 2023, following the outbreak of war between the two sides in April that year.
