El Obeid, September 30 (Darfur24)

Authorities in El Obeid have arrested journalist Omar Wad Abkar and detained him at Al-Awsat police station since Thursday, local sources told Darfur 24.

Sources close to Wad Abkar said the arrest was linked to a Facebook post in which he criticized the city’s deteriorating security situation and accused police — particularly the Criminal Investigation Unit — of failing to protect citizens.

His arrest comes amid heightened tensions in El Obeid, where residents have voiced growing frustration over rising insecurity, looting, and frequent attacks on property.

The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate reports that since the outbreak of war, 31 journalists have been killed, more than 230 detained, and at least 550 violations documented, including harassment, persecution, and threats. Last week, the Syndicate called on authorities to ensure journalists’ safety, end incitement, and respect professional rights.
