Khartoum, September 8(Darfur 24)

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced that it has received new funding from the Republic of Korea to provide cash assistance to 190,000 people and food support to 30,000 malnourished children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

The program stated in a statement that it received a $7 million contribution from Korea to help provide critical food and nutrition assistance to vulnerable communities in Sudan.

The WFP explained that the new funding is part of the joint WFP-Republic of Korea Emergency Assistance Response to Conflict-Affected Households project, which aims to expand food and nutrition support to families in hard-to-reach areas, including Darfur, Kordofan, and Khartoum states.

WFP noted that the funding allows for cash transfers to be provided to approximately 90,000 people for two months, ensuring that families in conflict areas can continue to purchase food. It also provides life-saving nutritional support to approximately 30,000 malnourished children and pregnant or breastfeeding women for three months.

“The situation in Sudan is critical, with more than half the population facing acute hunger,” said Laurent Bukera, WFP Country Director and Representative in Sudan.

He added, “This timely contribution from the Republic of Korea will help us save lives in hard-to-reach areas of Sudan. We are deeply grateful to the Government and people of the Republic of Korea for this generous funding.”

WFP requires $658 million to continue its operations over the next six months, as funding gaps are already being felt on the ground, with the program only having enough resources to assist people experiencing the most severe levels of hunger.
