The Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, appointed Wahbi Mohamed Mukhtar as President of the Constitutional Court on Saturday.

The Constitutional Court’s term expired on January 12, 2020, and the authorities have not appointed new judges since then.

The Sovereignty Council said in a statement obtained by Darfur 24 that the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council issued a constitutional decree appointing Wahbi Mohamed Mukhtar as President of the Constitutional Court.

The Council indicated that the decision was made based on the recommendation of the National Judicial Service Commission.

The Commission, which includes the Chief Justice, his deputies, the Ministers of Justice and Finance, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Khartoum, recommended.

The Constitutional Document stipulates that the court be formed by the Supreme Judicial Council, whose law has not yet been approved.

The 2005 Sudanese Constitution granted the National Judicial Service Commission the right to recommend the nine judges of the Constitutional Court by decree of the President of the Republic, with each judge’s term extending to seven years.
