Edem Wosoorno, Director of Operations and Advocacy at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), visited El Geneina, West Darfur, on Saturday.

Edem Wosoorno met with the Head of Civil Administration in West Darfur, Tijani El Tahir Karshom, in the presence of the Sudanese Relief and Humanitarian Operations Agency.

Edem said in a press statement that her visit to West Darfur aims to verify the suffering of children and women in Darfur.

She indicated that she seeks to coordinate and cooperate with all parties to reach those in need.

Edem warned of the danger of the spread of cholera in communities living in harsh conditions.

She described what is happening in Sudan as unfortunate and expressed her hope that civilians will not be targeted by militants.

For his part, the head of the Civil Administration in West Darfur State, Tijani Al-Tahir Karshom, said that the meeting discussed the humanitarian situation in Darfur.

He stated that they explained to the UN official the need to provide humanitarian services to those in need, both internally displaced persons and refugees, in accordance with the priorities set by the West Darfur government, namely food, health, water, and shelter.

Karshom indicated that the level of intervention by foreign organizations and UN agencies does not exceed 12% of the total need.

He revealed that West Darfur State has received more than 48,000 displaced families from Khartoum and Al-Jazeera, living in harsh conditions.
