Biale , July 13(Darfur24)
Eyewitnesses revealed that the Kiryandingo camp in the northern Ugandan city of Biali was subjected to a new attack on Saturday night, resulting in one death and several injuries.
This attack comes two days after South Sudanese refugees attacked Sudanese refugees in the same camp, leaving some in critical condition.
The Emergency Lawyers Group said in a statement obtained by Darfur24 that the Kiryandingo settlement, which houses a large number of Sudanese refugees, was subjected to violent attacks on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The group indicated that the attacks resulted in the death of one refugee and the injury of 24 others, including four in critical condition, in addition to the injury of a boy and a girl, with the number of injured increasing as the security situation inside the settlement deteriorates.
The group reported that the attacks began on Thursday evening, when Cluster L was attacked at 7:00 PM, followed by another attack at 10:00 PM targeting Cluster C and Cluster B. A spectacle of intimidation was organized the next day by a group of South Sudanese refugees, paving the way for renewed attacks targeting Cluster C again.
The group called on the Ugandan government to take urgent measures to protect Sudanese refugees, conduct a comprehensive investigation into these attacks, and hold those involved accountable.
In this context, the Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces (SUMOUD)said it’s following with deep regret and concern the repeated attacks on Sudanese refugees in Kiryandongo camp, which have resulted in one death and dozens of injuries.
It was revealed that the coalition leadership is in contact with the Ugandan government to ensure the safety and security of refugees, stop the attacks, and provide first aid and medical care for the injured.
He added: “The Sumoud leadership has witnessed a great response from the Ugandan leadership, consistent with the generosity and hospitality of Uganda, which has opened its doors without restrictions to accommodate those who have sought refuge from Sudan as a result of the war.”
He continued: “We hope that the relevant authorities will take immediate measures to secure and protect the refugees, prosecute and hold accountable the aggressors, and work to reach fair solutions to address the causes that led to these unfortunate clashes.”
It is worth noting that Kiryandongo settlement houses thousands of Sudanese refugees fleeing the war, along with refugees from South Sudan.
The camp has witnessed increasing tensions in recent months due to scarce resources and the absence of effective security policies.
