November 11, Khartoum — Dozens had been killed and injured following airstrikes by the Sudanese army on the city of Nyala, Sudan’s second largest city and capital of South Darfur State, over the weekend.

Eight members of one family were killed after a shell fell on a home in the Al Rahman area, east of the city. In another area, Al Matar, five women and three children were killed when shelling hit a home.

Nyala fell to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in October 2023 and has been experiencing repeated airstrikes by the Sudanese Armed Forces since. A report released by the Darfur Human Rights Network last week said that Nyala has become a “perilous environment” for unarmed civilians, human rights defenders, and activists, who face daily killings and assaults. Last month the RSF seized the home of a journalist in Nyala and received international condemnation.

On Sunday, the Sudanese opposition National Umma Party said in a statement that the Sudanese Army’s aircrafts bombed areas in Nyala, leaving dozens of innocent civilians dead and wounded, most of them children, women and the elderly. The party condemned the repeated indiscriminate bombing.

“Despite our repeated demands to the leadership of the Sudanese Armed Forces to spare citizens the dangers of aerial bombardment, unfortunately these violations continue without any consideration for the dangers threatening the lives of citizens,” the statement said.
