Khartoum, October 07 (Darfur24)

The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate on Tuesday condemned what it described as explicit incitement to kill journalist Rasha Awad and called on the authorities to launch an urgent investigation, provide her with protection, and hold those responsible accountable.

In a statement, the syndicate said a Facebook account using the name “Amira Karar” had published a post containing direct calls for Awad’s assassination and urging security agencies and armed groups to target her over her views and positions.

The syndicate said the post contained insults and direct threats against Awad before explicitly calling for her killing and referring to the bullet targeting her as a “bullet of truth” and her assassination as a “missing duty.”

It stressed that political or intellectual disagreement with a journalist does not justify calls for violence or murder, saying incitement to commit a crime constitutes a direct threat to journalists’ safety and freedom of expression rather than an exercise of opinion or criticism.

The syndicate warned that the spread of hate speech and incitement to violence amid Sudan’s growing political polarisation threatens journalists and could contribute to further violations.

It called on authorities to launch an immediate, serious investigation, identify those responsible for the post, and take legal action against them, while urgently protecting Awad.

Political and professional groups and public figures also condemned the alleged incitement campaign and called for an end to violence. They urged social media platforms to remove content containing death threats or incitement to violence and cooperate with the relevant authorities.
