Health services have been suspended at a health center in Sha’iriya, north of Al-Daein in East Darfur State, following the expiration of the contract of the organization that operated the facility, local emergency room volunteers said on Friday.
The Sha’iriya South Emergency Room appealed to humanitarian agencies, organizations, and philanthropists to urgently provide medicines and medical supplies and help restore maternity services at the Rahad Al-Bayar Health Center, which serves more than 5,000 people.
In a statement published on its Facebook page and seen by Darfur24, the emergency room said the center is facing severe shortages of medicines and laboratory supplies. Its pharmacy has stopped operating completely, while the laboratory is functioning at limited capacity and the maternity ward has suspended services.
The emergency room said the deterioration began after the contract of the organization managing the center expired, leaving the facility without an official sponsor and disrupting the continuity of healthcare.
It called for three months’ supplies of essential and life-saving medicines, laboratory materials, incentives for health workers, volunteers and midwives, as well as equipment and medicines needed to reopen the maternity ward.
The emergency room warned that the continued disruption of healthcare could increase risks for residents, particularly women, children and elderly people.
It said it was ready to coordinate with supporting organizations and oversee the center’s operations to help ensure the continuity of health services.
