Two Sudanese humanitarian workers who disappeared several days ago in the eastern Chadian city of Adré have been released, according to multiple sources.
A relative of the two men told Darfur24 that Hassab Al-Daem Hamed Al-Dawai, an employee of Doctors of the World, and Bashir Musa Khater, who works for the French humanitarian organization Alema, were freed following efforts by community leaders and local officials to establish their whereabouts.
According to the relative, the two aid workers were abducted by an armed tribal group and taken to an undisclosed location inside Chad, where they were held for several days.
The source said the men reported being tortured during their captivity and alleged that their captors accused them of having links to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) because of their humanitarian work in areas under RSF control.
Neither the Chadian authorities nor the two humanitarian organizations had commented on the circumstances surrounding the disappearance or release of the employees at the time of publication.
The two aid workers had reportedly disappeared after arriving in Adré on an official work mission, amid heightened security measures following the closure of the Sudan-Chad border crossing and restrictions on cross-border movement. Their release followed days of efforts by local communities and officials to secure their freedom.
