Buram, April 29 (Darfur24)

At least 10 people were killed and several others injured after armed clashes erupted in the town of Buram in South Darfur on Tuesday, culminating in the looting of the main market and widespread panic among residents, eyewitnesses said.

Residents told Darfur24 that the violence followed a series of killings over the past week that fueled tensions between two armed groups, eventually escalating into a large-scale attack on the town’s central market.

A local leader said the unrest began with a killing at the bus station, followed days later by the suspected murder of a shepherd inside the market. Attempts to mediate between the parties failed, and tensions deepened after another body was discovered near a trader’s home.

On Tuesday, relatives of one of the victims reportedly mobilized fighters, attacked the trader’s house, burned it down, and then stormed the market, looting shops and sparking further violence that left multiple civilians dead and wounded.

Musab Abdel Aziz, a resident, said gunmen raided shops in the afternoon, stripping the market of goods amid heavy gunfire. “All the shops in the main market were looted,” he said, adding that at least 10 people died and several others were injured, some of whom were taken to the hospital later that night.

He also reported that a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) convoy traveling from Tulus to Buram was ambushed, resulting in the death of five soldiers.

Sources said armed groups from both sides remain deployed inside the town, while intervention by local authorities and RSF units has been limited, with reports that forces were divided in their response.

A volunteer in the city noted that the residents now live in fear, as violence spreads to surrounding villages and towns. He said some wounded have yet to receive medical care, with families reluctant to transport them to Nyala due to insecurity and the presence of armed groups along the way.

Local voices have called for urgent intervention by authorities in Nyala to halt the violence and restore order in Buram.
