Nyala, March 10 (Darfur24)
Tension and unrest continued on Monday in the city of Nyala in South Darfur State, as armed groups gathered in search of those responsible for the killing of a trader last Friday.
Tijani Abu Bakr was shot dead by unknown gunmen while stopping at a gas station in Nyala. Witnesses said he had been riding a motorcycle and carrying sums of money at the time of the attack.
Eyewitnesses and local sources told Darfur24 that additional groups of armed men arrived from the Rahad al-Bardi area and gathered near the “Qadira” gas station on Ad al-Fursan Street, where the incident occurred.
They reported that efforts by local administrations and authorities to defuse the situation have so far been unsuccessful, as the victim’s family insists on receiving financial compensation.
Drivers of long-distance passenger vehicles reported that the Rahad al-Bardi road was closed to vehicles coming from the town of Kabra in Central Darfur State.
They added that several passenger vehicles were prevented from crossing the locality on Sunday, while military police of the Rapid Support Forces remained deployed around the site of the incident. Shops and pharmacies near the Qadira gas station also remained closed.
Nyala, which the alliance led by the Rapid Support Forces has designated as the headquarters of its parallel government, has recently witnessed an increase in attacks by unidentified gunmen following a period of relative calm.
