Rashad, February 14 (Darfur24)
A child has died from injuries sustained in a large fire that tore through the Qarnafleh camp for displaced people in Rashad locality in South Kordofan State, leaving extensive destruction to homes and property belonging to dozens of already vulnerable families.
A member of local emergency committees told Darfur24 that the blaze resulted in the child’s death and severely affected at least 73 families after flames completely destroyed their shelters and belongings.
The source added that the fire also killed large numbers of livestock, a primary source of livelihood for many residents, compounding the humanitarian impact on affected households.
Search efforts are ongoing to locate several missing persons, amid fears that the toll could rise given the limited emergency response capacity available in the area.
According to the emergency committee member, displaced families are now struggling to meet their most basic needs after losing shelter, food supplies, and income sources, leaving them in extremely harsh humanitarian conditions.
He appealed to donors, humanitarian organizations, and community supporters to intervene urgently by providing emergency shelter and tents, food and clean drinking water, clothing and blankets, medical assistance, and psychosocial support, particularly for children directly affected by the disaster.
Residents of the Qarnafleh camp live in fragile shelters constructed from highly flammable materials such as straw, wood, and plastic, making fires a persistent risk, especially under high temperatures and in the absence of proper firefighting resources.
The incident marks the latest in a string of disasters affecting displacement camps across Sudan, further deepening the hardship faced by communities already uprooted by ongoing conflict.
