Al-Daein, January 07 (Darfur24)
The civilian administration formed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in areas under its control has begun preliminary steps to establish a banking system in Darfur, starting with the creation of a bank named “Future Bank.”
Mohammed Idris Khater, head of the civil administration in East Darfur State, stated that he met in Al-Daein, the state capital, with a delegation from the committee tasked with establishing a banking system in RSF-controlled areas. He said the delegation presented a detailed briefing on plans to open a branch in Al-Daein and how the bank would operate.
In a special interview broadcast on Friday by East Darfur State Radio, Khater said the proposed banking system would rely on electronic money exchange services, which he claimed would provide a secure alternative to cash transactions.
He added that the initiative aims to address the absence of banking services and the severe cash liquidity crisis affecting Darfur and Kordofan, describing it as a “radical solution” to long-standing economic challenges in the region.
Khater did not clarify whether “Future Bank” would operate as a central or commercial bank, nor did he disclose details regarding its capital, ownership structure, or shareholders.
In May 2025, an economic conference organized by the RSF-backed civil administration in Nyala recommended the establishment of an alternative banking system in areas under RSF control, arguing that it would help stimulate local economic activity amid the collapse of the traditional banking sector in western Sudan.
