Abu Matariq, October 20 (Darfur24)
The humanitarian situation of displaced people in Abu Matariq, East Darfur, has worsened after they were evicted from school shelters and moved to alternative locations lacking basic services.
The Bahr Al Arab local administration relocated about 70 displaced families who had been staying in schools inside Abu Matariq to three new sites following the state’s decision to reopen schools that were closed due to the war.
A displaced resident, who asked not to be named, told Darfur24 that the families were moved to the Eastern School, the Northern School, and the Al-Daein University buildings without assessing the availability of services at the alternative sites.
He said the new locations suffer from severe shortages of water and are over two kilometers away from the market, making access to food and supplies difficult. He added that 10 families were unable to find any shelter at the new sites.
According to the Sudanese Agency for Relief and Humanitarian Operations, approximately 450 displaced families are currently living in the locality, most of whom fled from Khartoum, El Fasher, and Nyala. They continue to face extreme humanitarian hardship due to the ongoing fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
