Addis Ababa, October 17 (Darfur24)
The Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces (Sumud) has proposed the formation of a preparatory committee to define the issues and parties involved in the anticipated political process aimed at ending the war in Sudan.
A Sumud delegation held a consultative meeting on Thursday in Addis Ababa with the joint mediation team, comprised of the African Union, IGAD, the United Nations, and the Arab League, to discuss launching a credible political process that could lead to a ceasefire and lasting peace, according to a statement issued by the alliance.
Sumud said the meeting came at the invitation of the mediation team, during which the delegation presented the alliance’s vision. The proposal emphasized that the political process should be built on three integrated tracks: humanitarian response, ceasefire, and political dialogue, to address the root causes of the conflict.
The alliance stressed that the process must be Sudanese-led and owned, while also calling for the unification of regional and international mediation efforts.
Sumud noted that the Quartet countries’ roadmap, outlined in the September 12 statement, “met the aspirations of broad segments of the Sudanese people.” Therefore, the alliance said, it should serve as a foundation, with a broad coordination mechanism established to unify efforts toward peace.
The alliance’s vision also called for a package of confidence-building measures, including a nationwide humanitarian truce, delivery of aid to war-affected populations, release of prisoners and detainees, and repeal of laws and decrees that violate human rights.
Sumud announced its proposal to form a preparatory committee to agree on the agenda, participants, and structure of the political process, ensure its inclusiveness, and facilitate the role of regional and international partners.
The alliance affirmed it will continue engaging with local, regional, and international actors to support efforts to end the war through a credible, comprehensive political process that addresses the roots of Sudan’s national crisis.
