Port Sudan, September 11 (Darfur24)

The Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, on Wednesday replaced Sudan’s police chief and his deputy as part of an ongoing overhaul of the security sector since the conflict erupted.

According to a police statement, Al-Burhan appointed Lieutenant General Amir Abdel Moneim Fadl as Director General of Police, succeeding First Lieutenant General Khaled Hassan Mohi al-Din. He also named Lieutenant General Tahir Mohamed Al-Balula as Deputy Director-General, replacing Lieutenant General Mohamed Ibrahim Awadallah.

Fadl has previously served as Khartoum State’s police director since the outbreak of the war. He now faces immense security challenges in the capital, where state institutions have been destroyed or looted and armed gangs continue to threaten civilians.

The appointments come days after a major reshuffle in the army’s high command, the first significant leadership change since the conflict began.
