El Fasher, June 30(Darfur 24)
Limited clashes rupted in the southern part of the city on Monday in El Fasher, North Darfur, between the Sudanese army and the joint force on one side, and the Rapid Support Forces on the other, according to three identical sources told Darfur 24.
A Sudanese military source, who preferred to remain anonymous due to lack of authorization to make a statement, said that the Rapid Support Forces launched an attack on the army’s advanced positions in the southern direction, but the army and the joint force repelled the attack.
He explained that the attack was preceded by heavy artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces using howitzers toward the city, while the army responded with artillery and drones.
A medical source in the Ministry of Health in North Darfur told Darfur 24 that the artillery shelling that targeted residential neighborhoods on Monday morning resulted in a number of injuries, the number of whom has not yet been determined.
He added, “There is no confirmed information yet about civilian casualties resulting from the clashes in the city.”
The newspaper was unable to obtain an immediate response from the Rapid Support Forces.
The Rapid Support Forces have continued to impose a tight siege on El Fasher since April of last year, attempting to seize control of the city, which is the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region, after seizing the cities of Nyala, Zalingei, El Geneina, and El Daein in 2023.
