Mellit, May 30(Darfur 24)

Last Sunday, the Rapid Support Forces(RSF) arrested Mayor Muhi al-Din Adam Hussein and seven others in the town of Mellit, located 65 kilometers north of El Fasher, North Darfur State, on charges of inciting chaos and incitement against the Rapid Support Forces, according to local sources.

Hashim Ahmed Ismail, a member of the resistance committees in Mellit, told Darfur 24 that an armed force affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) raided the mayor’s home, located east of the city’s market, arrested him, and took him to their headquarters. They then arrested seven others, including activists, under the supervision of Lieutenant Colonel Abbas Katir, the RSF’s intelligence commander in North Darfur.

He added that the detainees were later transferred to the city of Al-Koma and then to Nyala Prison in South Darfur late Tuesday evening

For his part, a community leader in Mellit, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that efforts were currently underway to secure the mayor’s release, through contact with the city’s RSF leadership.

He indicated that the charges against him relate to mobilizing displaced persons arriving from El Fasher and inciting them against the RSF, without providing further details.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Mayor Muhyiddin has been arrested; he was previously arrested in May of last year and spent more than four months in detention. He is being held in the Rapid Support Forces detention centers in El Fasher, accused of supporting the joint force affiliated with armed movements, refusing to cooperate with the Rapid Support Forces, and refusing to recognize the decision of Major General Ali Yaqoub to dissolve the Supreme Emergency Committee, which he headed, and form an alternative steering committee to manage the city’s affairs. The decision came about a month after the Rapid Support Forces took control of the city in April of last year.

The Rapid Support Forces have not yet issued any official comment or statement regarding the arrest or deportation.
