January 7, 2025 El-Fasher: Darfur 24 Hundreds of families fleeing the events in Abuziraiga area and neighboring villages, in Zamzam camp 12 km southwest of El-Fasher, are facing deteriorating conditions due to food shortages and the increasing cold wave these days.
A number of escapees told “Darfur 24” on Tuesday that they fled their homes as a result of the recent attacks launched by militias allied with Rapid Support Forces on “Abuziraiga” and neighboring villages, leaving their belongings behind while they are now living in the open around Zamzam camp for more than two weeks.
Sheikh Ismail Yahya told “Darfur 24” that there are more than 1,000 families, mostly children, women and the elderly, sleeping in the open, amid a complete lack of basic necessities of life.
Yahya pointed out that they fled to Zamzam camp in search of security, but the displaced persons in Zamzam also fled their homes due to the artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces, explaining that they received some food aid but still need shelter tents and environmental sanitation materials.
The displaced Halima Ibrahim explained to “Darfur 24” that they are without warmth, food or security.
She added that they used to depend on themselves but now they are waiting for food aid from others, at a time when all residents of North Darfur have become displaced due to the war.
She noted that her children were crying from hunger and insecurity, and with the onset of winter, the suffering of their children has worsened, indicating that the lack of toilets forces women to travel long distances to relieve themselves.
In turn, Omd(Mayor) Ahmed Nour, a local leader in the camp, confirmed to “Darfur 24” the deterioration of humanitarian conditions among the displaced fleeing Abuzirariga area and the neighboring villages in Zamzam camp, calling on organizations working in the humanitarian field to intervene to save the lives of the fleeing people.
