December 28, 2024 Al-Dinder – Darfur 24 The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate condemned, on Saturday, the arrest of journalist Ahmed Yousif Al-Tay by the security authorities in the city of Al-Dinder in Sennar State.
The Syndicate said, in a statement obtained by “Darfur 24”, that “the journalist was taken to the city of Sinja without providing any legal reasons or directing charges against him.”
The Syndicate considered that this arrest reflects a dangerous methodology that threatens freedom of press and violates constitutional rights and international laws that guarantee freedom of expression and the protection of journalists. He added: “This step comes at a very sensitive time when Sudan needs free and independent media that unmask the facts and defends the rights of citizens.”
The Syndicate called on the security authorities to release Al-Tay immediately and stop arresting and harassing journalists, demanding the provision of a safe environment for journalists to work in, enabling them to perform their duties freely and independently.
The Syndicate called on international organizations concerned with press freedom and human rights to intervene and pressure the Sudanese authorities to ensure the protection of journalists and not to target them in any way.
The Syndicate reiterated that freedom of the press is the cornerstone of democracy and human rights, affirming its continued commitment to defending journalists and working with all partners to protect the profession and ensure that such violations are not repeated in the future.
