Residents in Um-Dukhun Town, southwest of Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur State, complained about the deterioration in health and treatment services, with residents rely on outpatient clinics and expensive private pharmacies.
The reasons for the decline of medical services are attributed to the suspension of support from the Federal Ministry of Health and Emergency Medicines from Medical Supplies, according to medical sources.
Ibrahim Issa Ishaq told “Darfur24” that citizens resorted to seek treatment at private clinics or travel to Nyala City due to the shortage of medical staff working in the town and the inability of the rural hospital to provide services. He pointed out to the suspension of Health Insurance Services that helped the poor cover the cost of laboratory tests and medicine.
For her part, citizen Khadija Othman confirmed the decline in reproductive health services and caesarean operations, forcing citizens to seek treatment outside the city.
She indicated that the high cost of medication has created a crisis for vulnerable groups and displaced persons, as many are unable to purchase medicines for colds, malaria and chronic diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes.
She called on the Civil Administration in Central Darfur State to find solutions to the medicines crisis and support Um-Dukhun Hospital with medical staff and diagnostic equipments.
A medical worker at Um-Dukhun Rural Hospital told “Darfur 24” that the decline in medical services is due to the stoppage of support from the Ministry of Health, the lack of human resources and the shortage of emergency medicines from Medical Supplies, noting that the citizens bear the cost of treatment.
He pointed out that most of the hospital workers are volunteers who do not receive any wages at the present time, with complete neglect from the Civil Government affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces.
He appealed to International and National organizations to support health services and emergency medicines of Um-Dukhun Hospital and provide the necessary medical assistance to enable medical staff to perform their work better.
