December 25-Kabkabiya – Darfur2 The official spokesman for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, Adam Rijal, announced the displacement of a number of residents from the city of Kabkabiya, 155 km west of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, to Sortoni IDP camp south of the city, fleeing the repeated airstrikes by the Sudanese army.
Rijal told Darfur24 that about 153 families arrived at Sortoni IDP camp during the current week after the city of Kabkabiya witnessed airstrikes for three consecutive days in mid-December.
He pointed out that the number of displaced persons (IDPs)who arrived at the camp is 730 individuals, most of whom were women, children and the elderly, and they were in dire need of shelter and food amidst a shortage of medicines and high prices of food commodities.
Rijal appealed to international and national organizations to provide humanitarian aid and urgent intervention to provide food, shelter and water.
Two weeks ago, the Sudanese army launched airstrikes on the city of Kabkabiya, targeting the city’s weekly market, killing more than a hundred people, according to human rights groups.
Preliminary statistics from the Kabkabiya Market Loss Assessment Committee obtained by Darfur 24, 22 shops were completely damaged and 5 shops were partially damaged, with losses estimated at millions of pounds.
