December 9, Nairobi — A drone strike on a petrol station in a southern suburb of Khartoum killed 28 people and injured 37 others, the Southern Belt Emergency Room said on Saturday.
The strike at New Soug Sitta in the Mayo neighborhood left people with burn and shrapnel injuries, the youth-led volunteer group said. The Mayo neighborhood is under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have been advancing towards Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, to try and take control of the city. The RSF took over the majority of Khartoum in April 2023 when war erupted. The Sudanese government retreated and relocated to Port Sudan. Neither side has claimed the attack on the petrol station.
SAF have made significant gains since launching a major ground offensive at the end of September and have undertaken an intense air campaign.
On Friday, an army airstrike on a mosque in northern Khartoum killed seven civilians and wounded many others. The attacks occurred as worshippers were leaving the mosque, reports said.
A recent report by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine revealed that 61,000 died in Khartoum since the war began in April 2023 until June 2024. Of these, 26,000 people were killed as a direct result of the violence. Over 90% of deaths in Khartoum went unrecorded, the report also said.
